Beat the heat

  1. PEE CLEARLY AT LEAST ONCE PER DAY. This little rule of thumb should ensure that you are properly hydrated.

  2. CARRY WATER or PLAN TO STOP AND DRINK. Running without being properly hydrated is like running your car without oil. There's little training value to running in an overheated state.

  3. RUN EARLY or RUN LATE. Avoiding the hotter parts of the day will allow you to train in more opportune conditions.

  4. SOAK YOUR HAT AND YOUR T-SHIRT. Dousing your duds every 20 minutes or so should help to keep your core temperature down.

  5. ADJUST YOUR EXPECTATIONS. When it's really hot, it's not realistic to expect a peak performance. Adjust your racing or training pace to suit the conditions.
